Installation instructions for Pervasive SQL2000 Patch on a Windows 98 Workstation for use with CareCentrics Dezine

Problem: In order for the DME VI 6 software to work correctly with the Pervasive SQL 2000 software, a patch is necessary. Without this patch the DME VI 6 software will encounter RM 21, or ?Key Buffer Too Small?, errors when run with the Pervasive software. If you encounter this error you will need to apply this patch. This patch is required on all workstations running Pervasive SQL 2000, Service pack 2 or greater.

Note: Pervasive SQL 2000, service pack # 2, is also known as version 7.82.

Pervasive SQL 2000, service pack # 3, is also known as version 7.91.

Note: It is recommended that your I.T. department or your computer technician perform this procedure. Some familiarity with computers and the windows operating systems is required.

Technical: The patch is a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) called W3bif109.dll. This DLL file is an older version of the Pervasive SQL 2000 software. It will replace an existing DLL file on each workstation named W3bifXXX.dll, where the XXX is a specific number based on the version of Pervasive SQL 2000 that you are running. The latest versions of this library file (included with Pervasive SQL 2000 service pack # 3 and #4) are named W3bif130.dll. In Pervasive SQL 2000, service pack # 2, the name of the library file that needs replaced is W3bif125.dll.

Installation: First install the Pervasive SQL 2000 on both the server and all of the client workstations you plan on using with the DME VI

6.4 software package. Follow the instructions provided by Pervasive.

It?s recommended that you choose a ?typical? installation and accept all of the default values when installing Pervasive SQL 2000. These instructions will assume that you have installed the Pervasive software in the default location, C:\PVSW. If you change the path where the Pervasive software is installed then you should substitute that path when following these instructions.

Next you will need the patch. This patch should be included with this document. The name of the patch is W3bif109.dll.

Important Note: The software on the server does not need to be patched. Only the individual workstations that you plan to use for accessing the DME VI 6.4 software need to have this patch applied.

Using windows explorer (or a DOS prompt) locate the C:\pvsw\bin directory. This directory holds the library file in question. You will need to make sure that you can see ALL the files in this directory because the Windows software hides .dll files by default. Locate the library file W3bifXXX.dll in this directory, where XXX is a three-digit number based on the version of Pervasive that you have loaded. For example, if you installed the latest versions of the Pervasive SQL 2000 software (SP # 3 or # 4) then this file will be named W3bif130.dll. For service pack # 2 the library file will be named W3bif125.dll. Be careful because there are many .dll files in this directory with similar names, so make sure that you have the correct file. It is the only file that begins with ?W3bif? and has a .dll extension. (W3BIF*.DLL).

Rename this file so that it has extension other than .dll. This is very important because the Pervasive software will actually read the three-digit number of this library file and use the highest numbered version of the library file that it finds. This means that if you have both the patch, which is named W3bif109.dll, and the original library file, for example W3bif130.dll, in the same directory then the Pervasive software will use the newer library file and you will encounter RM 21 errors when you attempt to run the DME VI 6.4 software. By renaming the file with a different extension, for example W3bif 130.old, the Pervasive software will no longer be able to use the original library file.

Note: Rather than renaming the original library file you can also delete it if you wish.

The last step is to place a copy of the patch, W3bif109.dll, in the C:\pvsw\bin directory. This completes the installation. It is necessary to reboot the workstation before the change takes effect. To test if the installation has been successful, simply log into the DME VI 6.4 system. If you can successfully log in and get to the main menu then this workstation has been successfully configured to work with the DME VI 6.4 software. If you receive RM 21 errors then the patch was not correctly installed. Carefully review these instructions.

Check the workstation to see if the patch, W3BIF109.DLL is in the C:\PVSW\BIN directory. Make sure the original W3BIF*.dll file, (such as W3BIF125.dll or W3BIF130.dll) has been renamed or deleted from this directory.
