Windows 98 Illegal Operations

Illegal Operation

Most everyone at one time or another has seen the famous error, "This program has performed an Illegal Operation and will be shut down..." These errors are usually program specific. They usually occur in just one or two applications and the other programs run normally.

Resolution

1. Uninstall - try uninstalling, rebooting, and then reinstalling the application. If this doesn't resolve the problem you may need to manually remove the application by booting into a command prompt (hit the F8 key before it says, "Starting Window 95/98", go to command prompt only, and manually remove the program (find the directory under which it is installed and use deltree to remove it).

2. Contact the Program Vendor - if this doesn't resolve the problem you may need to contact the program vendor for support. There is usually a customer support number on the documentation of the program.

3. Update - some programs give this error frequently even though windows and the program were working well and installed properly. One example of this is Internet Explorer 2.0. IE 2.0 would give these errors frequently (bad programming) and the only way to resolve them were to upgrade to the newer version. For example upgrading to IE 3.x fixed the illegal operation errors. Illegal Operation errors were common under the original version of Windows 95. Upgrading to Windows 95a and installing the updates fixed many of these errors. Windows 95B and Windows 95C are more stable than previous versions.
